Superpowers (song waveform)

The more I listen to our recording the less I like it. We’ve decided that we can’t see much point putting the work into recording vocals when the music isn’t high enough quality. We still have recording a demo as a high priority but the ‘all play at once and record everything’ strategy of our last recording just really isn’t cutting it. The drums came out adequately but the guitar has too much bleed from the drums and the bass is far too muddy.

In other news we have a pint night coming up. This is exciting for me, I used to go to pint night every week. Live music, cheap drinks and good times. We’re playing with the Scurvy Dogs and Honeybone and it’s on the 20th of October at Refuel.

Began snowing as we arrived at Chicks. Andy hated it. I liked it. Sarah loved it to a disconcerting extent. Then FOOD! I’d just like to thank (and lay the groundwork for a sponsorship deal with) NOS Energy Drink for keeping me going for the weekend… and destroying my stomach lining. But no pain no gain, right?

In depth discussion followed about the design principles of Spinny Food(?) Thing On The Table. It was found that, by balancing various empty food packets/cans on top of it, it still made no fucking practical sense whatsoever. Linda Lovelace watched on from her place above the main entry (turns out there’s porn at Chicks).

About three bus loads of party goers packed into Chicks for a 40th party dedicated to Nikki. Theme was “Creatures Of The Night”. Apparently “rapist” is inappropriate for the theme. The faux-spiderwebs around Chicks kept getting in my beard.

MUSIC TIME

RACKETS were first up, and they were intense! So intense, in fact, that I was forced to re-evaluate my entire life up until that point. I like their style, short songs are my favourite! Enjoyed their set a lot.

We were up next, easily the biggest crowd we’ve played to so far. So much fun! We finally got to do some A Capella dubstep on stage. They really seemed to be getting into the jam. I’d like to thank the woman in the front row for mishearing our song Bangers And Mash as “Bang Her And Bash”. I like it more already. As usual, Andy was upto his neck in sexy Asians and MILFs. I’m pretty sure he impregnated a few ladies during our set.

Thought Creature headlined, and oh man are they one slick, long, hard, unit. We’ve mainly been a “fuck pedals/effects onstage, we’re too punx” kinda band so far, but they sound HUGE for a three piece! Thanks a bunch guys, now we’re gonna have to spend several hundred dollars on new effects pedals. Anyway, they were cool as. I dearly hope that the bass player attained his goal of bagging a MILF that night.

Murderbike were up last, and kept all the groover’s grooving. Andy, Sarah and I busted out our best running man/MJ moves.

A couple of drinks later we were ready for bed, Hector was kind enough to let us have a room for free. We rocked to some Dream Theater (a.k.a. Andy’s ringtone) and attempted to play Freebird on a severely out-of-tune… instrument. I don’t know what it’s called (apparently it’s called an autoharp), but it’s pretty much a washboard with strings attached (kinda like a woman amirite). Little sleep was had, ’cause there was OONTZ (techno music) going until 9AM. We all managed a bit though.

Supermarket. Andy bought a 1.5L Pepsi when he only wanted a 500ml, ’cause it was cheaper. There was a debate between Sarah and Andy (whether to drink or throw out the rest of the coke) that escalated into a scene from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Well, that’s actually a lie. I’m just trying to make it seem as though there’s huge dramas within the band, ’cause that always leads to more press (right, Oasis?). Food was good. I bought 2L of Hanna Montana’s milk. It was as sweet as I’d imagined.

Andy and I ditched Sarah at Chicks (more drama lol) and explored Port Chalmers. Climbed a hill overlooking the bay. Impromptu version of “Pokarekare Ana” at the top, it was worthy of a National Bank ad at the least. Back at Chicks the Scurvy Dogs bought a whole HEAP of sweet gear with them.

MUSIC TIME

We were up first, bit of a change crowd wise from the prior night. Not many people there, but at least we annoyed some old people (one old lady had her hands over her ears our entire gig, it was hilarious). Busted out a new piratical song we half-assedly wrote a couple days before the gig, “I Wanna Put My P In Your V”. “Whooooa, we sodomize our cabinboys.” Love it! Also cheers to the flatties & co. who made the journey to see us.

Live theater from the R.A.W. Wenches was up next, I didn’t see much ’cause Sarah and I were on the door unfortunately, but Andy thought it was funny. And cleavage is always approved.

The Threads were up next, and despite being a guitarist down (he was in Wellington having his music played by a symphony orchestra, whoa!) they were fucking awesome! They only started earlier in the year (as it turns out I saw their first gig… don’t remember it, was pretty trashed *cough*), I think they’ve got the potential to get pretty big! I’m gonna be keeping an eye on what they’re upto over the coming months.

Scurvy Dogs were headling for International Talk Like A Pirate Day, and they were also celebrating the release of their radio single “Pirate Blood”. Awesome piratey stuff, I love “My Rum Bottle”, it’s so fucking catchy! There was an older couple who were TEARING UP the d-floor for these guys, it was a sight to behold.

It was such a cool weekend with fantastic bands, everyone I talked to was awesome. Can’t wait until our pint night gig opening for the Scurvy Dogs on 20th of October, ’cause our buds Honeybone are playing as well! The Boners and the Pussies always have fun together!

Kitten Surprise Podcast 1

Kitten Surprise opening for The Nerines 27/08/10

Recently we just played our first two proper gigs (live electric and over 10 minute set). We videoed some of the songs we played over the two nights to review how we are playing live. On the friday gig our energy was great but our sound not so much (the bass was too high in the mix and we kept fucking up). The saturday gig we played a lot better but we just didn’t have the same energy. It might have been because we were exhausted from the gig the day before (we’re pretty out of shape) or that the audience was small and not really getting into it. Let’s hope that for our next gig we have a combination of both factors, good sound and good presence.

In other news, we’ve been mixing our demo’s that we recorded. They sound rough but they’ll do. I think they give people a good idea of what our sound is like which is what we hoped from them. Haven’t recorded vocals for them yet. Or the guitar overdubs for the solos but should be doing that in the very near future.

We did 5 songs. Headaches, Superpowers, Angry Bear, I Am The Night and I’m Going To Funk You. Because we were recording the whole band in one take we had to make a few compromises. I don’t think we had any takes where the whole band played any of the songs perfectly but I don’t think it’s cringe worthy bad, hopefully not.

We’ve got a gig coming up at chicks hotel in Port Chamers. I’m friends with a guy who works out there and he got me in contact with the manager. Honeybone said they were keen to play with us and King Weasels Army were added as a support act. It’s the first gig we’ve had (excluding open mic nights) since Battle Of The Bands (over 2 months ago). We’ve got a new drummer, and a shit load more songs. I think we’re up to 7 original songs and 3 covers. WOAH! It’s also the first gig we’ve had to organize ourselves so hopefully it goes well. Which it will, because we’re awesome!
